Adult Education now has an online Bible study on e-Blog!!!

Welcome to CPC’s very first Blog, an online conversation about… whatever we make it.  My hope in starting this new ministry is to give folks an opportunity to grow in their relationship with God in Christ by learning more about our faith.  We’ll start in October with some discussions of some general themes of faith, specifically what Presbyterians understand as the “essential tenets of our faith.”

An online blog allows participants to log in at any time, from any place.  So, those of you who are awake at 2 a.m., come on in!  When you are on an extended vacation, check in.  If you are allowed, take your break of lunch time at work to study.  If you are a winter resident with CPC, you could still grow with us.  You could even, can you imagine, invite friends or family to participate.

My expectations are that all responses will be more than just academic, tell us what it means to you and your faith and life.  Be kind in your responses to others and remember that it’s alright to disagree with each other, and we are not looking for one absolute answer to any of our blogs or discussion topics.

New posts will be made to the blog by 10 a.m. each Tuesday.  I’ll take time to respond to the responses as well as begin the new topic.  I’ll lay out the topic, share some background, and then share my reactions and beliefs on the topic.

If you would like to talk in person about the blog, I am hosting a 10 a.m. class each Tuesday of October (except Oct 30 when I will be out of town).  For those who work at that time, if you would like to be a part of a face to face discussion, we can set up another time on a weekday evening.  I’d just need to hear from you on that request.

Enjoy the blog.  Be sure to scroll down after the directions for a general description of October’s study!

The basics of our October Blog:

Our First Blog

Essential Tenets of Presbyterian Faith

When we ordain people in our church to leadership positions we ask them several questions of faith which includes:

            (3) “Do you sincerely receive and adopt the essential tenets of the Reformed faith as expressed in the confessions of our church as authentic and reliable expositions of what Scripture leads us to believe and do, and will you be instructed by those confessions as you lead the people of God?”

Unfortunately, little work has been done to define those essential tenets (beliefs) [an opinion, thought, or doctrine held to be true by an organization].  Jack Rogers, who among his many claims to fame served as Moderator of the denomination, did his best to distinguish them and delineated the following ten:

                        Sovereignty                              Trinity

                        Incarnation                               Justification

                        Scripture                                  Election

                        Covenant                                  Stewardship

                        Sin                                           Obedience

Each week of the Blog in October, we’ll focus on two of them.  I hope this is a good beginning to what we can do together in study, even online.  And I hope that this study gives us a basis for our future discussions.

Please know that next to Romans 8, Matthew 5-7 is some of my favorite part of Scripture.  I am always intrigued how the writers kept the record of Jesus’ teaching, using the formula  “I have heard it said…. But I say to you…”  Here, Jesus gives the standard answer of faith that has been accepted, but challenges his followers to the possibility of some new understanding, sharing his view and his faith in God.

We’ll use that formula and approach in our Blog!

See you on the net….  Hm, remember, Jesus talked about a net too!
